Choosing a School in the UAE: A Parent's Guide

Warm, practical, non-transactional. Tools work without email. We never invent school rankings or imply KHDA endorsement.

Choosing a school in the UAE is a curriculum and logistics decision before it is a brand decision. This guide is for parents researching fit — not a property brochure.

Curriculum comparison

British (England National Curriculum / IGCSE / A Level)

Families who may return to the UK or another British-system school; clear exam pathways (IGCSE → A Level).

Transferability: Strong into UK state/independent Sixth Form and many Commonwealth systems; A Level recognition is wide but university offers are subject-specific.

American

US-bound pathways, credit/GPA culture, broader subject sampling before specialising.

Transferability: Transfers well within American schools; US university applications use GPA + SAT/ACT/AP depending on school offering.

IB (PYP / MYP / DP)

Mobile families who may move again; internationally portable diploma.

Transferability: IB Diploma is widely recognised; mid-programme transfers can be harder if the receiving school does not offer the same IB continuum.

Indian (CBSE / ICSE)

Families aligned with Indian board exams and possible return to India; often strong maths/science culture.

Transferability: Smooth within CBSE/ICSE networks; moving into British/IB later may need bridging for language/humanities expectations.

French (AEFE / French curriculum)

Francophone households or French university pathways; language immersion is the point.

Transferability: Excellent within the French network; switching to English-medium later needs deliberate language support.

How KHDA inspection ratings work (and what they miss)

  • KHDA publishes inspection judgements for private schools in Dubai (commonly Outstanding / Very Good / Good / Acceptable / Weak — check the live report for the current scale wording).
  • Ratings summarise inspection findings at a point in time; they are not a personal fit score for your child.
  • What ratings often miss: commute reality, sibling priority politics, how a specific year group feels day-to-day, and whether the school's culture matches your family.
  • Abu Dhabi schools sit under ADEK (not KHDA). Do not mix the frameworks when comparing emirates.
  • GetSettleDown does not invent school rankings and is not affiliated with KHDA, ADEK, or any school.

For Abu Dhabi, use ADEK published information for inspection and licensing context. This guide’s fee bands focus on commonly published Dubai private-school tuition ranges; always confirm emirate-specific rules. Applications, waiting lists, assessments

  • Popular year groups fill early — start research before you land if you can; deposits and formal offers still track residency reality.
  • Waiting lists are school policy, not a regulator queue. Ask how the list is ordered (siblings, staff, date of application).
  • Assessments vary by curriculum and year band. Prepare documents (passports, prior reports) without sharing child data with us.

Real cost picture

Tuition is the headline. Budget also for registration, uniform, transport, trips, and exam fees. Use the estimator below for sourced indicative ranges, then verify each school's published sheet for your intake year.

The commute question

Families underestimate Dubai traffic at school-run times. A "20-minute" midday drive can become an hour. Map the route at drop-off and pick-up before you fall in love with a campus across the city.

Mid-year transfers

Mid-year places exist but are thinner. Curriculum continuity matters — especially mid-IB or mid-IGCSE. Ask about seat availability, assessment windows, and how credit/year placement is decided. Do not assume a January move is automatic.

We store parent email (and optional parent name), coarse year-group band, curriculum preference, and areas — never a child's name, age, date of birth, or school name. Privacy: School-guide leads (parent contact only — never child identifiers) are kept up to 24 months, then deleted, unless you ask us to erase them sooner.

FAQ

What is the best curriculum for my child in the UAE?
There is no universal best. British, American, IB, Indian (CBSE/ICSE), and French paths suit different mobility plans and university destinations. Use our curriculum-match quiz (no email) as a starting research list — not a school ranking.
How do KHDA ratings work?
KHDA publishes inspection judgements for Dubai private schools at a point in time. They are useful context but miss commute, culture fit, and year-group feel. Abu Dhabi uses ADEK. GetSettleDown is not affiliated with KHDA or ADEK.
What do school fees in Dubai look like in 2026?
Published tuition varies widely by curriculum and year band. Our fee estimator shows indicative sourced ranges with dates — always verify the school’s live fee sheet for your intake year, including registration, transport, and extras.
Do you collect information about my child?
No. We only collect parent contact details and optional coarse year-group band (Primary / Secondary / Post-16). Never child name, age, date of birth, or school name.
