On day one, get a Nol card you can top up for metro, bus, and tram, and settle how Salik tolls will be paid for any car you drive — your own tag and account, or the rental/corporate arrangement. Use official Salik and RTA channels; ignore fee tables pasted from old blog posts.
Nol — personal vs anonymous products
RTA’s Nol system covers Dubai public transport. Anonymous products (often labelled Silver or Gold in market materials) are fine for short stays; a personal / registered Nol is usually what residents want for account top-ups and lost-card recovery. Confirm current card types, registration, and top-up methods on rta.ae and in the RTA Dubai app (as of August 2026). We will not invent card prices or daily fare caps.
Salik — register, activate, top up
- Open the official Salik register-and-activate guidance: Salik — register and activate a Salik tag.
- Create or sign in to a Salik account and link the tag to the vehicle you control. Where the portal asks for Emirates ID or UAE PASS, complete that link after those identities exist — see UAE PASS before Emirates ID.
- Top up before you drive gated roads. Low-balance behaviour and auto-top-up options are defined on Salik — confirm there, not on a screenshot from 2022.
Salik without owning the car
Rental cars and corporate leases often already carry a Salik tag billed to the lessor or employer. Ask, in writing if needed: who pays tolls, whether you must register a guest account, and how disputes are handled. Activating a personal tag on a vehicle you do not own can create billing confusion — follow Salik’s account rules for the arrangement you actually have.
RTA Dubai app
The RTA Dubai app is the practical dashboard for Nol top-ups, journey planning, and many driving-related services once your profile is linked. Exact menus change; use the app store listing tied to RTA and the help inside the app. Licence exchange is a separate RTA process — see exchanging a UK driving licence in Dubai.
What we will not invent
No toll price list, no “always free for X days,” no third-party tag reseller pitch. This is day-one mobility setup for Dubai — not advice for other emirates’ systems.
