Opening a UAE bank account before your Emirates ID

What banks typically ask for, why Emirates ID is commonly requested, and how to confirm documents without guessing KYC rules.

Opening a UAE bank account before Emirates ID is a common hope — and a common friction point. Banks set their own KYC rules under Central Bank supervision; Emirates ID is commonly requested. We will not invent a pre-EID shortcut. Ask the bank, then sequence the rest of your move honestly.

What the playbook says

Central Bank of the UAE CDD/KYC guidance for licensed financial institutions (as of November 2025, desk-read July 2026) treats Emirates ID as the national identity card LFIs verify via the ICP validation gateway or UAE Pass — while also allowing other acceptable IDs such as passport with a certified “Original Sighted and Verified” copy. Source: CBUAE CDD/KYC guidance (PDF). Our plan still sequences banking after Emirates ID as the default — enquire earlier if you must, but treat any pre-EID answer as bank-discretionary.

Practical sequence

  1. Get a UAE mobile number early if you need OTPs — playbook guidance notes SIMs are available from licensed telecom operators with passport ID (as of July 2026; confirm with the operator).
  2. Progress medical/biometrics and Emirates ID on the official residence path (UAE Government — Emirates ID).
  3. Shortlist licensed banks and ask each for the current document list for new residents — including whether any account type accepts you before physical EID is issued. Get that answer in writing from the bank, not from a forum.
  4. Open the account when KYC allows. Confirm salary transfer, cheque book, and digital banking setup with the branch or app — we do not publish fee tables here.

If you must enquire before EID

You can enquire early. Treat any “yes, before EID” answer as bank-specific and time-limited. Keep UK accounts available as backup until UAE KYC clears. Confirm with the official source for your product; if unsure, wait for Emirates ID rather than paying intermediaries who promise approvals.
