Connectivity, a salary account, and local credit are three different clocks. A tourist SIM can unblock OTPs on day one; a resident banking relationship usually waits on identity KYC; UK credit history does not travel with you. Sequence them honestly — no invented card offers or AECB score targets.
SIM — day one vs resident
Our playbook step “Get a UAE SIM” (as of July 2026) notes that mobile numbers are commonly required for OTPs when opening accounts, and that SIMs are available from licensed UAE telecom operators with passport ID. Source: Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). Airport and city retail plans differ; confirm registration and tourist-vs-resident terms with the operator. Upgrade or re-register when your residence status changes if the operator requires it — do not invent a universal rule.
Banking — salary account sequencing
Opening a UAE bank account sits after Emirates ID in our dependency graph because CBUAE CDD guidance treats Emirates ID as the national identity LFIs verify, while still allowing other acceptable IDs such as passport with certified copy in some KYC paths. Confirm with the bank: bank account before Emirates ID. Salary transfer, cheque books for rent, and digital banking are product features — ask the branch for the current checklist, not a forum thread. Credit from zero — AECB reality
- Assume no transfer of UK Experian / Equifax history into UAE lending decisions. Start as a new file until local data exists.
- Learn what Al Etihad Credit Bureau (AECB) publishes for consumers on official channels (aecb.gov.ae). We will not invent score bands or “guaranteed approval” products.
- First credit cards for new residents are often constrained — secured cards, salary-transfer products, or low limits are common patterns in the market. Confirm eligibility with the issuer after your salary account is live; treat every offer as bank-discretionary.
- Build repayment history on small, understood products before stretching to larger credit. Budget banking and insurance lines in first 90 days cost categories.
