The first 90 days in Dubai rarely fail because someone forgot a single fee — they fail because cash is demanded in the wrong order. This page itemises the cost categories most UK movers under-budget, in sequence, without inventing amounts. Budget for each line; confirm current figures at the official or counterparty source with a dated check.
Categories in roughly this order
- Visa, medical fitness, and Emirates ID admin— government and clinic channels bill for residence processing and identity. Confirm current fees on the portals for your visa type (UAE Government — residence visas, as of July 2026). Sequence: medical / biometrics then Emirates ID.
- Short-term housing before a long lease— weeks of serviced apartment / hotel-monthly / holiday home while identity and banking catch up. Structure choice matters more than a fake nightly rate — see short-term housing before Ejari.
- Housing upfront cash structure— rent paid by cheque patterns or other structures, security deposit, and agency fee as categories. Amounts and cheque counts vary by landlord and market cycle. Confirm in the tenancy offer; register via DLD / Ejari processes (Dubai Land Department, as of July 2026).
- DEWA deposit — a utilities activation category after Ejari in our playbook. Confirm the current deposit on dewa.gov.ae; we do not publish figures (DEWA setup guide).
- School deposits — holding or enrolment payments if you have children. Treat as a decision with refund rules, not a universal fee. Confirm with the school; see school applications from the UK.
- Driving licence / car— RTA exchange or alternatives after Emirates ID for many UK licence holders; confirm eligibility and fees on rta.ae (UK licence exchange). Vehicle purchase or leasing is optional and separate.
- Health insurance — mandatory resident cover categories; employer vs own / dependants. Confirm on UAE Government — getting a health insurance (as of August 2026) and employer vs own cover.
- SIM and banking setup— connectivity and salary account as enablers for OTPs and rent cheques. See SIM, banking, and credit from zero.
How to use this without fake ranges
Build a spreadsheet with these category rows and empty amount cells. Fill each cell from a primary quote dated in the month you decide — school invoice, tenancy offer, DEWA activation screen, insurer certificate, or government fee schedule. Resist “AED X–Y” blogs; they age badly and hide who is actually billing you.
Before you budget the Dubai side, close out the UK side properly — our guide to what to tell HMRC, the Student Loans Company and the Child Benefit Office before you leave covers the notifications that prevent expensive surprises later.
If you're carrying initial funds in cash, mind the declaration threshold — our guide to UAE customs, cash and duty-free rules explains the AED 60,000 line and how it applies to families.
