Search results for "moving to Dubai from the UK" are long checklists that mix a visa menu, a fee table, and a neighbourhood ranking. The part that actually fails on departure morning is smaller: a passport that is inside the entry window, a certificate that needed legalisation weeks ago, a medicine you cannot explain at customs, and HMRC still thinking you live in the UK. This page is that list. It does not choose a visa for you and it does not quote charges.
Passport first
FCDO travel advice for the UAE says that to enter on a full British citizen passport, the expiry date must be at least six months after the day you arrive. If you already have a UAE residence permit, that page says the expiry must be at least three months after arrival. A transit that does not pass immigration has its own three-month line. Read gov.uk — UAE entry requirements and renew before you pay for a fare you cannot use. If you also hold another nationality, the document you use to fly back to the UK is a separate rule — which passport dual nationals travel on.
Documents that have a chain, not a folder
Degree, marriage, and birth certificates are not "bring a photocopy." If a sponsor, school, or free zone asked for legalisation, the UK order is its own sequence. Start it when the offer is real, not the week you fly. The walkthrough is which UK documents to attest, and in what order. Carry the originals you will present in the cabin. A scan on your phone is a backup, not the document.
Medicine, cash, and the bag you check
Controlled or prescription medicine is a customs question, not a packing tip. Check the permit path before you travel — bringing prescription medication from the UK. Cash has a declaration line of its own — UAE customs, cash, and duty-free. We do not tell you how much spending money to carry. That number is yours.
Tell the UK you are leaving
HMRC, and if it applies the Child Benefit Office and the Student Loans Company, do not see your Emirates ID. The leaving-admin list is what to tell HMRC and the other UK offices, with the P85 and Self Assessment detail in telling HMRC you are leaving. Voluntary National Insurance from April 2026 is a different decision, and it does not have to be filed in departure week — State Pension and voluntary NI from the UAE. Keep a UK account you can still reach. A refund is not useful if the only account that can receive it is closed.
Then stop reading and date the plan
After you land, the order is medical and Emirates ID, then a registered tenancy, then the utility that asks for that registration. Dubai and Abu Dhabi use different names for those last two steps. The Dubai sequence is moving from the UK to Dubai. Abu Dhabi is Tawtheeq and ADDC. The week-by-week list is the first 90 days.
Guides are the reference. The lead is a plan timed to the day you land — build it from your arrival date. It is free to start. It is not immigration advice.
