Which UK documents do I need attested before the UAE — and in what order?

You need the documents your UAE receiving authority asks for, legalised the way that authority accepts — not a universal “attest everything” stack. For UK papers, that usually starts with FCDO legalisation (apostille); some UAE processes then still ask for Embassy or MoFAIC attestation. Confirm per document before you pay a courier.

What an FCDO apostille is

The UK Legalisation Office legalises eligible UK documents by attaching an apostille — a certificate that the signature, stamp, or seal matches their records. When MoFAIC / Embassy steps are still asked for

An apostille is the UK side. UAE ministries and some employers or schools may still require attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFAIC) — in the UAE or via a UAE Mission abroad — depending on document type and receiving office. That is why “Apostille Convention” membership does not always end the conversation for movers: the receiving checklist wins. Stage order to confirm (not one rigid chain)

1. Check whether a UK notary or solicitor certification is required before FCDO will legalise your document type — gov.uk lists which papers need that step and which are issued ready for legalisation.
2. Obtain FCDO legalisation (paper or e-Apostille where eligible) via the Legalisation Office service above.
3. If the receiving UAE authority still requires it, complete MoFAIC / UAE Embassy attestation — either at the UAE Embassy in London before travel, or through MoFAIC channels after arrival. Confirm which path your receiving office accepts; do not invent a single sequence for every marriage, birth, and degree certificate.
4. Submit the legalised pack to the school, sponsor, or civil office that asked for it — keep originals and scans organised.

• Birth — children’s school and dependant processes commonly request legalised birth certificates; timing relative to landing depends on when the school or sponsor needs them on file.
• Education — degrees and previous-school records for admissions or professional recognition often need legalisation; school checklists vary — ask admissions, do not paste a blog list.
• Police / PCC — where a certificate of good conduct is requested, confirm issuing body and legalisation rules with the asker; document eligibility for apostille is listed on gov.uk.
