What happens to my UAE residence visa if I'm out of the country for more than 6 months?

The 180-day absence rule, who it does not cover, and the entry-permit sequence if a residence visa is nullified — sourced to u.ae, with no fee quoted.

Travel documents — keeping a UAE residence visa valid while you are abroad

A long trip out of the UAE is not the same as a holiday from a UK mortgage. For many residence visas, time outside the country is part of the visa's conditions. Miss the window and the visa can stop being usable before you have booked the flight home. This page is the dependency and the re-entry sequence. It is not advice on which visa to hold.

The dependency

On the UAE government's general provisions for a residence visa, the general rule is that if an expatriate resident lives outside the UAE for more than 180 days continuously, the residence visa is nullified automatically, and a new entry permit is required to enter again. The same section lists exceptions — among them investors, students enrolled abroad, and people sent abroad for treatment with an approved medical report. Do not assume you are on that list. Read u.ae — general provisions for the residence visa.

If the visa is already nullified: the permit sequence

The same page describes an entry permit for residents who stayed outside for more than six months for study, work, or treatment. The order it states is:

  1. Submit the application from outside the UAE.
  2. Apply only after 180 days outside the country.
  3. Give a valid reason for the absence.
  4. When the application is approved, enter the UAE within 30 days of the approval date.

Two limits on that service are explicit. It is not for residents of Dubai. Holders of a golden visa or green residency do not use it: the page says they can enter directly while that residency is valid. Where you apply (ICP, GDRFA, or a typing centre) depends on the emirate that issued the residence — see which portal to use. We do not publish the fine. The page describes one; confirm the live amount before you pay.

What to do before the 180 days, not after

If you still hold a valid residence and you know you will be outside for months, ask the authority that issued it — before you cross 180 continuous days — whether your category is an exception or whether you need to re-enter. A permit after nullification is a recovery step. It is not a plan. Family sponsorship, if you have it, sits on your own residence remaining valid; see sponsoring a spouse and children after you land.
